How do I work out my cost per mile from my MPG?

Cost per litre X 4.5454 = Cost per gallon
Cost per gallon / mpg = cost per mile

Don’t forget to double it to allow for the return journey if appropriate.

Can I tow 2800kg with my van?

I’m not sure where the issue of driving licence categories comes into it but my understanding is:
A category B (ONLY) licence allows you to tow any trailer up to a combined (ie vehicle & trailer) MAM of 3500kg BUT the MAM of the trailer must be less than the UNLADEN weight of the towing vehicle. It also allows you to drive a VEHICLE with a MAM of 3500kg, towing a trailer of 750kg or less.

The B+E licence allows you to drive any vehicle up to 3500kg MAM PLUS any trailer up to the manufacturer’s limit. There’s no 3.5 GTW limit for B+E licence holders, except for the weight of the towing vehicle.

Patrick said “any road vehicle that exceeds 1525kg ulw would require an `O` licence” – I guess he didn’t mean that?? That would include every van bigger than a Scudo.

Mileage Allowances

Richard wrote:
Steve

I am not sure what you mean, if you were employed & your company sent you to London you would charge them mileage 44p per mile there & back.

40p/mile, not 44p.

Richard wrote:
There is no legal obligation for you to declare it to taxman or anyone else.
There is no obligation to keep any records

Apart from the detailed written log of all your journeys.

Richard wrote:
Taking that a step further you own the van & pay all of the outgoings. You receive 44p per mile while driving it. It sucks all of the money out of limited company into your tax free pocket.

You can even assume the 44p includes vat (its a loophole exploit it while it still exists)

You’re only allowed to claim the VAT on the fuel element, not on the full mileage allowance and now you’ve got to keep VAT receipts at least covering the VAT claimed.

Basically Gordon turned this bit of legislation into a Dogs dinner & he is too arrogant to revisit it (Suits me fine)

In practice the current situation is no different to the situation that existed for years before the newest legislation was brought in. All that’s really changed is the mileage rates and the fact that the allowance is statutory rather than concessionary.

It’s worth pointing out that the self-employed also have the option of using the mileage allowance scheme providing their turnover isn’t over the VAT registration treshold.

Credit Card Fraud – Police not interested

Fraud Act 2006 Pat. Any deception involving credit cards, cheques or online transactions (Paypal etc) is now dealt with by the financial institution rather than the police. It’s then up to the bank to report it to the police if they feel it necessary.

It leaves the Police free to deal with important things like children chalking on the pavement.

Are we in the quiet season yet/

It has seemed a bit slow recently but we’re running at about the same turnover as this time last year so no particular worries.

One thing I’ve noticed is that we’ve had LOADS of local owner-drivers phoning up looking for work, which is something I’ve never seen in October & November before, so it looks like there’s a bit of a slowdown up here.

Businesses all over are struggling with increased costs at the moment and I’m fully expecting to see a few more than the usual rash of liquidations and bankruptcies in January and February. It might be a good idea to put a bit more effort than usual into collecting those overdue accounts.

“They must be running on red diesel”

Red diesel is currently around 47p/litre plus VAT, in bulk. You can’t claim the VAT back (obviously) so that’s 55p/litre. You won’t be able to offset that 55p/litre against tax so that pushes the effective price up to 70p/litre. Pump price for normal diesel is currently around 89p/litre plus VAT.

At 30 mpg your fuel cost per mile covered will be 13.5p on normal diesel and 10.5p or red.

I somehow don’t think that a cost differential of 3p/mile could account for a 50% price differential in the other courier’s rate. They’re just operating to a different business model to you.

Fatal accident closes M4 at Newport

John wrote:
The four who raced down the wrong carriageway and killed that couple MUST be charged with death by dangerous driving, although I would prefer to see a charge of murder. Their actions could not have been more lethal if they had killed the couple in their own home.

It was their choice, their actions and THEIR FAULT.

I think they’ll have problems getting the charges to stick with 3 of them John.

Seriously though, why do they have to close the motorway for the whole day because of an incident like this? Ok, it’s a ‘crime scene’ and they have to record things – but who in their right mind is going to dispute that the driver of the car speeding the wrong way up the motorway was responsible for the crash? It seems that he’s dead anyway so what’s to be gained from not just shovelling the remains of the cars onto a truck and reopening the motorway?
