Withheld telephone numbers

I don’t see the connection between being ex-directory and withholding your number to start with, they’re two entirely different things.

I’d say that in this business calling people with your number withheld is just about as foolish as not answering calls from withheld numbers.

at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

(4) A device referred to in paragraphs (1)(b), (2)(b) and (3)(b) is a device, other than a two-way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data.

You realise that THEY have to pay for you ringing them on an 0800 and they don’t receive anything out of what you pay your mobile company. Odd sort of a scam.

If that price is for 0800 numbers then it’s an unsustainable business plan – so eventually they will cease to exist and you may lose continuity on your number.

If someone was to offer to do £100 worth of work every month for you for life for an up front fee would you accept the offer?

Phone Scam or just clever ££££

It’s not a scam. Personal Numbers (starting 070) were introduced back in the late 90s and allow you to route calls to a landline or mobile (and often international numbers as well) free of charge. They’re handy if you live in an area where your mobile doesn’t work and you’re too much of a cheapskate to divert your calls to your mobile. At the time they were introduced they cost about the same to call from a landline as calling a mobile number. Since then the cost of calling mobiles has dropped but the cost of calling personal numbers hasn’t. The called party doesn’t receive any revenue from the number but their number provider makes a nice profit.

Ofcom regulations state that from 1st September 2007 anyone calling an 070 number that will be charged at over 20p/minute must hear a pre-call announcement advising them of the charges. Most telcos haven’t introduced this yet but BT has.

If you tell the person concerned that they’re probably losing business because people are hearing this message every time they call them then they’ll possibly do the right thing and publish their actual number.

There’s one member on here that I avoid ringing whenever possible as I know it costs me 50p/minute to do so.

0845 numbers

Absolutely untrue Dave. There’s no plans to change 0844/0845 number charges IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE but Ofcom have made it clear that they’re looking into a new pricing model for these numbers as well.

0870 Numbers

There was some discussion a few weeks ago about 0870 numbers and I meant to add a word of warning at the time. Unfortunately I got side-tracked and never got round to checking my facts.

From next January calls to 0870 numbers will have to cost no more than your telecom provider’s standard calls to numbers starting 01/02. Good news so far then.

The bad news is that if you use an 0870 number you’re likely to have to pay a per minute charge to your number provider for all incoming calls.

This won’t apply to 0844, 0845 or 0871 numbers.

0871 number charges

It depends on the next three numbers after the 0871. It could be anything from 5p/minute to 12p/minute if you’re calling from a BT phone. They’re excluded from most mobile and landline inclusive minutes and usually cost 10p-15p to call from a mobile.

Nuisance Calls on my Mobile

I don’t think you can bar witheld numbers at network level on a mobile anyway can you? You can set some handsets to ignore them or send them straight to voicemail but I don’t think there’s anything else you can do.

You can report them to your network and the police as nuisance calls but in my experience the first response of a mobile network operator will be to offer to change your number – pretty useless if you’re trying to run a business.

I’m assuming they’re ringing your mobile direct rather than ringing a landline that’s diverted to your mobile?

Martin, I’ve just noticed the “07966 XXXXXX – which will divert to my global number while in Europe”. I know you’ve not had that Global SIM for long – I just wanted to check that you know that calls to IOM mobiles numbers probably don’t come out of your inclusive minutes – so you’re probably still paying for the diverted leg of the call: which is exactly what you were trying to avoid.

You obviously didn’t explain yourself very well if they told you it can’t be done – it’s pretty standard stuff. If you want to stick with BT then you either need a proper phone system and multiple lines or ask them about Featureline and a ‘Hunt Group’ which cuts out the need for the phone system (but I hate it.). http://www.btbroadbandoffice.com/linesandcalls/featureline

New mobile phone law includes hands free

I think you’re missing the point of the new law.

If you’re not in control of your vehicle then you can already get up to 9 points for driving without due care and attention or driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.

The new law makes it an endorsable offence (ie points on your licence) to use a hand-held mobile while in control of your vehicle – whether or not it causes you to make any driving errors. Previously it was a non-endorsable offence UNLESS they could show that you were not in proper control of the vehicle and prosecute you for without due care etc.
