Again Courier Owner-Drivers v Courier Companies

What’s the point of owner-drivers being able to post GTMs then? By your new definition they’d be a ‘company’ straight away if they subbed a job out.

Braemar – Autoroute 2005

Is there something I don’t know about the A93 between Perth and Braemar? It does exist does it?

Autoroute’s telling me that it’s 398.8 miles from Warrington to Braemar, taking 6 hours 9 minutes and going via Grantown on Spey. If I put a Stop in on the A93 it turns to 309 miles and 4 hours 46 minutes.

Is it just another Autoroute bug or is there something wrong with the A93. Marauding tribes of wild hagisses maybe?

What are the Pros and Cons of trading through a Limited Company

Tax reasons and you can walk away from the company’s debts if your biggest customer goes bump on you.

Cons: A newly formed limited company can find it difficult to get credit (except from couriers apparently). Your annual accounts will cost a few hundred quid more to get prepared if you can’t do them yourself. That’s about it.

0870 Numbers

There was some discussion a few weeks ago about 0870 numbers and I meant to add a word of warning at the time. Unfortunately I got side-tracked and never got round to checking my facts.

From next January calls to 0870 numbers will have to cost no more than your telecom provider’s standard calls to numbers starting 01/02. Good news so far then.

The bad news is that if you use an 0870 number you’re likely to have to pay a per minute charge to your number provider for all incoming calls.

This won’t apply to 0844, 0845 or 0871 numbers.

Bloody Smoking Ban

In England (and Wales I believe): If the vehicle is EVER used as a workplace by anyone except a single named person, even if there’s only one person at a time in the vehicle, then it’s a smoke-free vehicle.

So if it’s your own vehicle and no-one else EVER drives it for work or sits in it for work then you can smoke in it.

The thick b******s that drafted the legislation put in an exemption to allow you to smoke in your house if people come to repair it but don’t seem to have added the same exemption for vehicles. So in theory your van will be smoke-free if anyone else (RAC, Police, mechanic) has to ever use it as their workplace. That situation will probably be refined by an expensive House of Lords appeal at some time in the future.

In Scotland your van is smoke-free even if no-one else is allowed access to it.

Credit checking companies

Aren’t all these credit checks just based on the latest published accounts of the company and whether they’ve got any CCJs against them. Do any of them look at more up to date information, for example the actual payment history recorded by factoring companies?

EMP Distribution, Aston

I would suggest you have a quick look at Companies House before dealing with them.
